Scots Students have more than £2 billion of Debt
The Student Loans Company has revealed that levels of student debt in Scotland have reached the £2 billion level.
The company said that in a single financial year, university students took out a hefty £212 million-worth of loans.
The ruling Scottish National Party faced attacks over the sum, as it has pledged previously to limit the debt levels of Scottish graduates.
Scottish Liberal Democrats education spokesman, Jeremy Purvis accused the administration of failure, suggesting that, apparently, things have changed for the SNP since it made such commitments.
Mr Purvis said, "After a year in office they are now presiding over an increase in the very student debt that they had promised to write off.”
His Conservative counterpart, Murdo Fraser added that the level of student debt reported by the loans company did not even give the true picture, as it does not include outstanding sums accrued through credit card debt and personal loans.
Those debtors north of the border could try to clear debt using a Scottish trust deed.
